US Open: Alexander Zverev Survives Another Five-Set Marathon to Reach Third Round

New York, September 4, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

Top seed Alexander Zverev survived another gruelling five-set battle at the US Open, defeating France’s Quentin Halys 6-4, 4-6, 7-6(3), 6-7(3), 6-3 to reach the third round at Arthur Ashe Stadium.

Just two days after spending four hours and 53 minutes on court in his opening-round victory, Zverev was pushed to the limit again in another late-night thriller that lasted four hours and 33 minutes.

The German took time to settle against the world No. 52 Halys and was not at his best, struggling at times with his normally potent backhand and serve. However, Zverev raised his level at crucial moments while Halys showed some signs of difficulty handling the occasion.

Zverev, who won his first Grand Slam title at Roland Garros this year, is competing as the top seed at a major for the first time. He reached the US Open final in 2020, where he surrendered a two-set lead against Dominic Thiem, and will be aiming to go one step further this year.

The 28-year-old’s next opponent will be 25th seed Alejandro Tabilo of Chile. Zverev defeated Tabilo in the first round at last year’s US Open and leads their ATP head-to-head record 2-0.

The German also overcame Tabilo in three sets in the 2024 Rome semifinals after dropping the opening set and winning the second in a tiebreak.

Zverev has enjoyed an exceptional Grand Slam season, reaching the Australian Open semifinals, winning the French Open and advancing to the Wimbledon final. His victory over Halys made him the first male player to record 20 Grand Slam match wins this year, taking his 2026 major record to 20-2.
