Hollywood actress Drew Barrymore once opened up about her perspective on love and marriage, reflecting on the experience of going through three divorces and the stigma often associated with separation.
An old clip from The Drew Barrymore Show has resurfaced online, in which the actress spoke about the difference in how society views a breakup compared with divorce.
“I’ve been married three times,” Barrymore said, explaining that while a breakup is often viewed simply as something that did not work out, divorce can carry a sense of shame that makes people hesitant to go through it again.
She said that after experiencing divorce, she initially felt she would do anything to avoid facing that shame again. However, she eventually changed her perspective and said she could imagine getting married four times over the course of her lifetime if that was what she wanted.
Barrymore also stressed the importance of setting one’s own emotional boundaries and not allowing others to define personal choices.
Actress Valerie Bertinelli, who has been married twice, agreed with Barrymore’s thoughts on shame. She said that people can accumulate feelings of shame throughout their lives and argued that letting go of that burden is important to feeling worthy and confident.
Bertinelli acknowledged that some forms of shame can serve a purpose, but said another kind can lead to self-loathing. She encouraged people to do what feels right for them as long as their choices do not hurt anyone.
Barrymore responded warmly to Bertinelli’s perspective, saying, “Okay, that’s my favorite advice.”
