Bollywood superstar Akshay Kumar has opened up about portraying a psychopath in his upcoming film Haiwaan, revealing how conversations with friends in the police force helped him understand the behavioural nuances of the character.
Appearing on the quiz reality show Kaun Banega Crorepati, Akshay clarified the character dynamics in the film, stating that he plays the antagonist while Saif Ali Khan portrays the hero.
“Sir, I am the villain of the film and Saif is the hero. My character is that of a psychopath, and there is a history behind it — how I turn into one, what I go through, and then the film moves forward from there,” Akshay said.
Amitabh Bachchan, who hosts the show, asked the actor about his preparation for such a dark role.
Akshay explained that several of his friends in the police force have encountered people with psychopathic behaviour and shared insights into how such individuals can operate in real life. According to the actor, his friends told him that psychopaths do not necessarily display the exaggerated facial expressions often shown in films.
“They want to blend in with us, and they blend in so well that nobody can tell what is going on in their minds,” Akshay said, explaining that this insight influenced his approach to the role.
He added that director Priyadarshan also advised him against relying on exaggerated expressions. Instead, Akshay chose to remain largely quiet and understated in the film, while Saif’s character does more of the talking.
“I am completely blended into the audience, and that’s how I got into the character,” he said.
Haiwaan, directed by Priyadarshan and starring Akshay Kumar and Saif Ali Khan, is scheduled to release on September 11.
