Bollywood actors Ajay Devgn and Tiger Shroff have submitted their responses to the Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) over their promotion of Vimal Elaichi, while the response of Shah Rukh Khan is still awaited.
The FDA had issued notices to the three actors seeking clarifications over their involvement in the advertisement, which the regulator is examining as part of a probe into alleged surrogate marketing.
According to the FDA, the notices were issued over alleged violations of the Advertising and Claims Regulations, 2018. The investigation centres on allegations that the sale or promotion of a product is being carried out by using the name or form associated with another product.
The regulator had sought explanations from Devgn, Shroff and Khan regarding the advertisement and the claims associated with it.
The FDA is currently examining the responses received from Devgn and Shroff, while awaiting Khan’s reply. After reviewing the responses, the regulator will determine whether the claims made in the advertisement and the manner in which the product was promoted comply with the applicable regulations.
Further action will be decided after completion of the investigation.
The Maharashtra FDA, headed by IAS officer Tukaram Mundhe, has also recently drawn attention for strict enforcement of food safety standards across Mumbai. The department has taken action against several food establishments, including well-known outlets and government canteens, over alleged food safety violations.
The crackdown has prompted food vendors and eating establishments across Maharashtra to revise food preparation and storage practices to avoid penalties and other regulatory action, including possible cancellation of licences.
