Trump denies plans to rename Hormuz Strait after himself, says US ready for more Iran strikes

Washington, September 3, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

US President Donald Trump has said the American military is prepared to launch further strikes on Iran “any time we want”, as tensions in the Middle East continue to escalate.

Speaking to reporters at the White House on Wednesday, Trump described the latest US military action as a “very heavy attack” and said American forces were ready to conduct another strike whenever required.

The President claimed the US military had destroyed “all of the new equipment” Iran had attempted to build along the Strait of Hormuz.

Iranian officials, meanwhile, said a US strike on Tuesday night hit a wedding gathering in southern Iran, killing at least four people and injuring dozens. US Central Command said it was reviewing the reports and stressed that the US military “never targets civilians”.

Trump also backed away from an earlier suggestion that the strategically important Strait of Hormuz could be renamed after him. Asked whether he genuinely intended to change its name, he replied, “No, no … it was just thrown out there.”

Earlier on Wednesday, Trump had posted on Truth Social: “Now that we have it under USA control, should we change the name Hormuz Strait to TRUMP STRAIT???”

The remarks came less than a week after Trump signed an executive order renaming Lake Ontario “Lake America” amid tensions with Canada over tariff disputes.

US media have also reported that Trump told a rally in Long Island last month that he would declare the Strait of Hormuz a US territory after defeating Iran.

Meanwhile, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed grave concern over the renewed exchanges of fire between the US and Iran.

UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said Guterres was deeply alarmed by reports of civilian casualties, including the reported strike on a wedding ceremony in Iran. He stressed that all parties must comply with international humanitarian law and respect the principles of distinction, proportionality and precaution.

Guterres called for an immediate cessation of military action and urged all sides to exercise restraint, warning that further escalation could have devastating consequences for civilians and the wider region.

The UN chief also urged Washington and Tehran to urgently return to diplomacy, stressing that a comprehensive and lasting settlement can only be achieved through dialogue and negotiations.
