The death toll from Monday’s 7.4-magnitude earthquake in western Colombia has risen to 188, while 1,677 people have been injured, according to the Colombian Association of Capital Cities (Asocapitales).
The latest figures showed 95 deaths and 997 injuries in Cali, while Pereira reported 79 deaths and 278 injuries.
Colombian President Abelardo de la Espriella said the earthquake damaged 1,575 homes and affected infrastructure at six airports, where commercial flight operations have been suspended, Xinhua news agency reported.
The Colombian government declared a state of national disaster following the earthquake to facilitate relief and emergency response operations.
According to the Colombian Geological Service, the earthquake struck at 7:34 a.m. local time on Monday. Its epicentre was near San Jose del Palmar in the department of Choco, at a depth of 96 km.
Asocapitales said it was maintaining contact with the capitals of affected departments and coordinating with local mayors and their teams to assess the damage and identify urgent relief requirements.
International leaders expressed solidarity with Colombia following the disaster.
French President Emmanuel Macron extended his condolences to the victims and their families and praised rescue teams and others involved in relief efforts.
“In this ordeal, Colombia can count on our friendship and our support,” Macron said in a message posted on X.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy also expressed solidarity with the people of Colombia and called for support for those affected by the earthquake.
Rescue and relief operations continue in the affected areas as authorities assess the full extent of the damage.
