India’s High Commissioner to Bangladesh, Dinesh Trivedi, met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi on Tuesday and sought his guidance on further strengthening bilateral ties with Bangladesh, a day after his meeting with Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman in Dhaka.
“High Commissioner Dinesh Trivedi called on Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi today and sought his guidance on further strengthening the multifaceted and enduring bilateral relationship between India and Bangladesh in a constructive manner with a people-centric approach,” the High Commission of India in Bangladesh said in a post on X.
Trivedi had met Rahman in Dhaka on Monday, during which he conveyed Modi’s greetings and expressed India’s intention to work with the Bangladesh government and its people in a positive, constructive and forward-looking manner.
The two sides exchanged views on matters of mutual interest and discussed ways to strengthen bilateral relations with a people-centric approach, according to the Indian High Commission.
The engagements come amid efforts to improve ties following a period of diplomatic strain between the two neighbours. Analysts have viewed the recent interactions as a possible indication of a more positive phase in bilateral relations.
A report in Bangladesh’s Daily Sun said geography, history, trade, rivers, security and people-to-people links give both countries strong reasons to prevent political disagreements from overwhelming the broader relationship.
The report also noted that former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s recent virtual interaction with journalists in New Delhi had triggered strong reactions in Dhaka. India’s Ministry of External Affairs has maintained that the Indian government had no involvement in the interaction and does not endorse remarks made during it, particularly those concerning the government in Dhaka.
Trivedi, who recently assumed office, has adopted a conciliatory approach and stressed the need to address bilateral challenges through mutual understanding, the report said.
India and Bangladesh have previously resolved difficult disputes through sustained negotiations and political engagement, it added.
The report also pointed to the possibility of greater high-level engagement, including an invitation to Rahman to visit India and attend the BRICS Summit scheduled to be held in New Delhi in September.
