A mobile phone was recovered from the barrack of former Hassan MP Prajwal Revanna at Bengaluru’s Parappana Agrahara Central Prison during a six-hour search operation by Central Crime Branch (CCB) officials, prompting disciplinary action against a prison officer.
Revanna, who is serving a life sentence in connection with a rape and sex video case, is the grandson of former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda and son of JD(S) MLA H.D. Revanna.
The search operation, conducted on Tuesday, covered the barracks of several high-profile inmates, including actor Darshan, his girlfriend Pavithra Gowda and Prajwal Revanna. Officials reportedly recovered around 10 mobile phones, along with chargers and a pen drive, during the searches.
The Android phone recovered from Prajwal’s barrack was allegedly found concealed under his bed. The barrack was occupied by Prajwal and another convict, Pratap Rai.
Following the recovery, Parappana Agrahara police registered an FIR and launched an investigation into how the prohibited device entered the high-security prison and who was using it. Rai has been named accused No. 1 and Prajwal accused No. 2 in the case.
Investigators are examining whether the phone was being used by Prajwal or Rai.
The incident has raised fresh questions over security arrangements inside the prison and allegations of preferential treatment for high-profile inmates.
Following the recovery, DGP Alok Kumar ordered disciplinary action against prison officials. Assistant Superintendent Eeranna Rangapur was suspended for alleged dereliction of duty, while Jail Superintendent Anshu Kumar was served a show-cause notice seeking an explanation for the security lapse.
Officials have also raised concerns over Prajwal allegedly not wearing the prescribed white prison uniform, adding to questions about whether he was receiving special treatment while serving his sentence.
The development comes days after prison authorities conducted searches in the barracks on August 6, when no mobile phone was reportedly recovered from Prajwal’s possession.
Authorities have now directed officials to determine how the phone reached the barrack and identify the person who allegedly supplied it. Officials have also reportedly warned that Prajwal could be shifted to another barrack if the source of the device is not established.
The recovery has once again brought the spotlight on security and surveillance at Bengaluru Central Prison, which has previously faced allegations of preferential treatment being extended to influential inmates.
