The government is working to raise women’s participation in India’s aviation workforce to 25 per cent, Union Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu said on Monday, highlighting the country’s significantly higher share of women pilots compared with the global average.
Speaking at an event, Naidu said women currently constitute around 15 per cent of India’s pilots, against approximately 5 per cent globally.
“Nari Shakti is powering India’s aviation growth. Women already make up 15 per cent of our pilots, against 5 per cent globally. We’re working to take that to 25 per cent and create even more opportunities for women across the aviation workforce,” the Minister said.
Naidu said India had consistently created opportunities for women to enter the aviation sector, contribute to its growth and take up leadership positions. He stressed the need to build further on the progress achieved so far.
“I always say that, proudly say that, in terms of global aviation, the numbers that India shows in terms of women participation is much, much higher,” he said.
The Minister clarified that the 25 per cent target would extend beyond pilots to encompass the broader aviation ecosystem and emerging areas.
“No matter what, let it be the airport-related jobs, or let it be the eVTOLs, or whatever ecosystems that we are creating, we want to see more participation of women,” he said.
Naidu also underlined the importance of creating a work environment in which women can participate comfortably and advance into leadership roles.
He said the participation of women at the event was encouraging and expressed hope that greater representation would inspire more women to pursue careers across the aviation sector.
