The Centre is ready for a detailed discussion in Parliament on the students’ protest and the July 20 police action against demonstrators in Delhi, Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju said on Monday, urging the Opposition not to disrupt the proceedings or walk out of the debate.
The issue concerns the police action at Jantar Mantar during the ‘Sansad Chalo’ march organised over the NEET paper leak and other alleged examination irregularities. Opposition parties have been demanding a statement from Union Home Minister Amit Shah over what they have described as police “brutality” against the protesting students.
Speaking to reporters at the Parliament complex, Rijiju said the government had made its position clear during the Business Advisory Committee (BAC) meeting.
“During the BAC meeting, the government has made it very clear that it is ready to have a full and detailed discussion on students’ movement and activities related to it — be it in Delhi or across the nation,” he said.
Rijiju urged the Congress and other Opposition parties to participate in the discussion without creating disruptions.
He said the government was prepared to address the police action, the students’ movement and all related issues, adding that the Opposition should allow the Home Minister and the government to present their position.
“The country deserves to know everything, but the Opposition should assure us that they won’t disrupt the proceedings or run away from the discussion,” Rijiju said.
The Monsoon Session entered its final week on Monday, with Opposition MPs continuing their protests over the NEET issue and the July 20 police action.
Earlier, Congress MP K.C. Venugopal wrote to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla seeking a direction to Home Minister Amit Shah to make a statement on the police action against the demonstrators.
Venugopal cited reports of alleged police brutality and disproportionate use of force against students and young protesters, including allegations that pellet guns were used during the incident.
