The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has seized the mobile phone of a woman employee of R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital as part of its fresh probe into the August 2024 rape and murder of a junior doctor, sources said on Monday.
The staff member was reportedly the first hospital employee to contact the victim’s family after the junior doctor’s body was found in a seminar room at the state-run hospital on the morning of August 9, 2024.
Sources familiar with the investigation said the phone was seized following allegations by the victim’s family that the woman employee gave contradictory information during subsequent calls made to them within a short period after the body was discovered.
The device has been sent for forensic examination. Investigators are examining call records and other digital information to establish the circumstances surrounding the calls and determine how and on whose instructions the staff member contacted the family.
The CBI’s newly constituted Special Investigation Team (SIT) is also scrutinising calls made to and received by the employee before she contacted the victim’s relatives. Investigators are examining whether the records could provide clues about the circumstances surrounding the crime or point to a wider conspiracy.
The forensic examination is also expected to determine whether deleted data can be recovered from the device and whether other digital communications could yield additional evidence beyond the call logs.
The development comes amid renewed scrutiny of the circumstances surrounding the case. On Sunday, West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari ordered a fresh state police investigation into the hurried cremation of the victim at a crematorium in Panihati in North 24 Parganas district in August 2024.
The junior doctor was found dead at R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9, 2024, triggering widespread protests and a nationwide debate over the safety of medical professionals and the handling of the investigation.
