A retired Army jawan was killed and three others injured after a speeding SUV allegedly travelling on the wrong side of the road ran them over in Hyderabad’s Hydershkote area on Monday, police said.
The hit-and-run incident took place near SMP School under the jurisdiction of Narsingi Police Station.
According to preliminary information, the Mahindra XUV was being driven at high speed when it struck the Army veteran, who was riding a scooty. The impact threw him into the air and he died at the spot.
The SUV continued ahead and hit several other people, including two persons travelling on a Rapido two-wheeler, leaving three injured.
Eyewitnesses said five youths travelling in the SUV fled after abandoning the vehicle at the scene. They were allegedly under the influence of alcohol. Police are investigating the allegation and trying to identify and apprehend those involved.
The injured were shifted to a hospital, where one of them was reported to be in critical condition.
Police said rash driving, excessive speed and travelling on the wrong side appeared to have caused the crash. They are also verifying whether the occupants of the SUV were intoxicated.
Preliminary investigation showed that the vehicle was registered in the name of Babu Goud, a resident of the Shamshabad airport area. The body of the retired jawan was shifted to Osmania General Hospital for post-mortem examination.
Several other road accidents were reported in Telangana.
In Hyderabad’s Kondapur, a man identified as Srinivasulu, 50, from Wanaparthy district, was killed and another person injured after a car collided with a motorcycle.
In Jagtial district, a youth was killed and another injured when their motorcycle lost control and crashed into a road divider. CCTV footage showed the speeding bike hitting the divider. The injured person was reported to be in critical condition.
In Mahabubabad district, a woman was killed after being knocked down by a milk van while crossing the Warangal-Khammam highway near Marepeda. A truck following the van subsequently lost control and crashed into a roadside tree, critically injuring its driver and cleaner.
In Hanamkonda district, a couple travelling from Siddipet towards Hanamkonda were injured when their car rammed into a culvert while attempting to avoid a two-wheeler.
Meanwhile, three people were injured in a car-truck collision in Wyra town of Khammam district. Police and local residents rescued one person trapped inside the damaged car, and all the injured were taken to a nearby hospital.
