Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday said the three new criminal laws introduced by the Narendra Modi government are based on three key pillars — technology, timelines and trust — with the objective of making justice delivery faster, more effective and citizen-centric.
Addressing a ceremony at the Police Training School ground in Gorimedu after presenting the President’s Police Colour to the Puducherry Police, Shah said the new criminal justice framework represents a significant departure from the colonial-era system.
He said the increased use of technology, along with clearly defined timelines for investigations and judicial procedures, would improve efficiency and transparency in the criminal justice system. Building public confidence in the justice delivery process was equally important, he added.
The three new laws — the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam — have replaced the Indian Penal Code, Code of Criminal Procedure and Indian Evidence Act, respectively.
Congratulating the Puducherry Police on receiving the President’s Police Colour, Shah described the recognition as among the proudest honours for a disciplined police force.
He noted that despite having fewer than 5,000 personnel, the Puducherry Police are responsible for maintaining law and order, ensuring internal security and protecting the Union Territory and its people.
Shah also underlined Puducherry’s rich spiritual and cultural heritage, saying the police force has an important role in protecting the dignity and security of the Union Territory.
With the conferment of the President’s Police Colour, Puducherry has become the 18th State or Union Territory in the country to receive the prestigious distinction. The President’s Police Colour is considered the highest honour awarded to a police force for distinguished service and professional excellence.
Lieutenant Governor K. Kailashnathan, Chief Minister N. Rangasamy, Home Minister A. Namassivayam, Director General of Police Shalini Singh and other senior officials attended the ceremony.
Shah is scheduled to participate in another programme in Puducherry later on Sunday, where he will flag off a Har Ghar Tiranga Yatra at Muruga Theatre Signal as part of events promoting the national flag and patriotic participation ahead of Independence Day.
