At least 20 passengers were injured, several of them seriously, after a private bus fell from a bridge following a collision with another vehicle in Andhra Pradesh’s Anantapur district on Sunday.
The accident took place early in the morning on the Hyderabad-Bengaluru National Highway near Pogarur in Pamidi mandal.
According to police, the private bus was travelling from Hyderabad to Bengaluru when it collided with another vehicle on the bridge. The force of the impact sent both vehicles off the bridge.
Police and local residents immediately launched a rescue operation. Personnel pulled passengers trapped inside the bus and shifted the injured to government hospitals in Pamidi and Anantapur.
A JCB machine was also deployed to rescue some of the injured, including the bus driver. The driver’s condition was reported to be critical.
The accident caused a major traffic jam on the national highway, leaving motorists facing considerable difficulties. Additional police personnel were deployed to the area and subsequently cleared the congestion.
The accident comes amid continuing concerns over road safety in Andhra Pradesh, which records a high number of road crashes. On average, around 22 people lose their lives in road accidents in the state each day.
The state recorded 9,194 road accidents between January and June this year, resulting in 4,058 deaths. Last year, road crashes claimed an average of 23 lives a day in Andhra Pradesh. Although the daily fatality figure has declined slightly this year, authorities continue to be concerned about the high number of deaths.
Police have identified violations of traffic rules and safety norms, along with negligent driving, as major causes of road accidents.
Two-wheeler users account for the largest share of fatalities. Of the 9,194 accidents recorded this year, 3,980 involved two-wheelers. As many as 1,835 people who died in these crashes were two-wheeler riders, accounting for 45.21 per cent of the fatalities.
Pedestrians recorded the second-highest number of deaths, with 669 fatalities.
