SAD Demands Immediate Implementation of Women’s Reservation Bill, Backs 50% Increase in Parliamentary Seats

Chandigarh, August 8, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) on Saturday demanded the immediate implementation of the Women’s Reservation Bill and extended support to the Union government’s proposal to increase the number of parliamentary seats by 50 per cent across all states.

The decisions were taken at a meeting of senior SAD leaders chaired by party president Sukhbir Singh Badal, where the leadership held detailed discussions on key issues before Parliament.

The SAD said it supported both the immediate implementation of women’s reservation and the proposed delimitation exercise.

Backing the Union government’s proposal in the Lok Sabha to increase parliamentary representation by 50 per cent in all states, Sukhbir Badal said the party favoured a “fair and equitable” delimitation process that ensured a proportionate increase in representation for every state.

“This will ensure justice is done to all States,” Badal said.

On women’s reservation, the SAD president said the party’s position was rooted in the teachings of the Sikh Gurus, who, he said, championed the dignity, equality and equal rights of women.

Badal also cited the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) as an example, saying the Sikh body had already made provisions for women’s reservation in its House.

The meeting was attended by senior SAD leaders Balwinder Singh Bhundar, Harsimrat Kaur Badal, Sikandar Singh Maluka, Maheshinder Singh Grewal, Gulzar Singh Ranike, Janmeja Singh Sekhon, Dr Daljit Singh Cheema and Hira Singh Gabhria.
