All government hospitals and health institutions in West Bengal will observe a two-minute silence on Sunday in memory of the RG Kar rape and murder victim, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari announced on Saturday.
The tribute will begin at 11 a.m. and will be preceded by the lighting of a lamp in memory of the victim, Adhikari said after meeting state Health Minister Sharadwat Mukherjee.
The Chief Minister said this would be the first government-led programme to commemorate the victim, claiming that no similar initiative had been organised during the previous Trinamool Congress government.
The programme comes two years after the rape and murder of a woman doctor in the emergency department of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata on August 9, 2024. The incident triggered widespread protests, marches, night vigils and hunger strikes, with people from various sections of society demanding justice.
A separate memorial programme will be held on Sunday at Lok Sanskriti Bhavan in Panihati in North 24 Parganas district, the Assembly constituency represented by the victim’s mother, who is now a BJP MLA. Family members of the victim are expected to attend the event, which is being organised under the banner of a trust formed in her name. Adhikari will also be present.
The case initially saw the arrest of Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer with the Kolkata Police. Following an order of the Calcutta High Court, the CBI took over the investigation. No further arrests were made during the initial probe. The evidence against Roy was consolidated and a chargesheet was filed, after which a Sealdah court convicted him and sentenced him to life imprisonment.
Following the change in government, the investigation was reopened. The CBI recently submitted a status report before the Sealdah court and informed it that a new investigating officer would take charge of the case.
Seema Pahuja had earlier served as the investigating officer, while Sandipani Garg has now been assigned the responsibility. CBI Joint Director Anurag Kumar is heading the new investigation team.
The team has already visited the crime scene and the Panihati crematorium as part of the renewed investigation.
