A man wanted in connection with the alleged rape and murder of a minor girl was killed in a police encounter in Uttar Pradesh’s Bulandshahr district early Sunday, officials said. His alleged accomplice escaped under cover of darkness and a search operation was launched to trace him.
The deceased, identified as Monu, a resident of Fatehpur Jadon under Chola police station limits, carried a reward of Rs 50,000 for information leading to his arrest. A case relating to the rape and murder of the minor was registered at Kakod police station on August 1.
According to SSP Dinesh Kumar Singh, police personnel were conducting checks in the Gulaothi police station area when they signalled two motorcycle-borne suspects to stop near Chhaprawat. The suspects allegedly opened fire at the police team, prompting retaliatory firing.
“One criminal was seriously injured by a bullet, while the other escaped, taking advantage of the darkness,” Singh said.
Two SWAT team personnel, Sub-Inspector Sandeep Kumar and Constable Narendra Kumar, were injured during the exchange of fire. Bullets also hit the bulletproof jackets worn by Gulaothi police station in-charge Dharmendra Kumar Sharma and Secunderabad police station in-charge Shailendra Pratap Singh.
Monu and the injured policemen were taken to a community health centre. As Monu’s condition deteriorated, he was referred to the district hospital, where doctors declared him dead during treatment.
Police recovered a .32-bore pistol, two magazines, live and spent cartridges and a motorcycle without a number plate from the encounter site.
SSP Singh said several criminal cases were registered against Monu in different jurisdictions, including Bulandshahr, Gautam Buddha Nagar, Government Railway Police (GRP) Bareilly and GRP Aligarh.
Police teams were continuing efforts to identify and apprehend the absconding accused and ascertain his possible involvement in other cases.
