Eleven European tourists and one crew member were rescued after their speedboat went missing in the waters of Tomini Bay off Indonesia’s Gorontalo province, authorities said on Saturday.
The survivors were located by a joint search and rescue team and safely evacuated to Tojo Una-Una Regency in Central Sulawesi, according to Heriyanto, head of the Gorontalo Search and Rescue Office.
Rescue teams are continuing the search for the missing captain.
The speedboat had departed from a dive resort in Central Sulawesi on Friday morning and was headed to a port in Gorontalo. It was scheduled to arrive around 11 a.m. local time but failed to reach its destination, prompting a search operation.
“We received a report on Friday and immediately launched a search operation,” Heriyanto said, adding that three search units resumed operations early Saturday, covering the vessel’s estimated route and surrounding waters.
The cause of the boat going missing has not yet been disclosed.
Meanwhile, in a separate maritime incident, Indonesian authorities suspended the search for 14 people who remain missing after the passenger boat KM Nurul Salsa sank off South Sulawesi province on July 15.
The National Search and Rescue Agency said the decision followed a 10-day operation that covered all designated search areas without yielding any new leads. Of the 76 people on board, 58 were rescued, four were confirmed dead and 14 remain unaccounted for.
The agency said search efforts would resume if fresh information about the missing passengers becomes available.
