Mayawati Welcomes Dharmendra Pradhan’s Resignation, Seeks Action Over Police Crackdown on Student Protesters

Lucknow, July 25, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati on Saturday welcomed the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, saying the move was appropriate in view of the nationwide protests by students and youth and should have come earlier.

The former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister also demanded a fair investigation into the police action against students protesting at Jantar Mantar and sought strict action against personnel accused of using force on demonstrators.

In a post on X, Mayawati alleged that several students sustained serious injuries during the police crackdown and called for the identification of officers accused of misbehaving with women protesters. She urged the government to initiate disciplinary as well as criminal proceedings against those found responsible.

The BSP leader also sought the withdrawal of FIRs and complaints lodged against protesting students and youth, arguing that prolonged legal proceedings could adversely affect their future. She said such a step would help restore a positive atmosphere.

Appealing to students, Mayawati advised protesters not to allow any political party to exploit or politicise their movement and urged them to safeguard their future while pursuing their demands.

Student protests have been continuing in different parts of the country over the alleged leak of the NEET-UG examination paper. Several student organisations and the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) had been demanding accountability in the examination system and seeking the Education Minister’s resignation.

Dharmendra Pradhan submitted his resignation on Saturday, ahead of the proposed third round of talks between the government and CJP.
