West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Saturday alleged that anti-social elements infiltrated a protest rally over the alleged NEET examination paper leak in Kolkata and were responsible for attacks on police personnel and journalists.
Addressing the State Assembly on the concluding day of its extended Budget Session, the Chief Minister said the state government had instructed the police not to use force against peaceful and democratic protests. However, he alleged that the rally turned violent after anti-social elements joined the demonstration.
According to Adhikari, the protest, organised by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) along with the student and youth wings of various Left parties, was attended by individuals who were not students and had no connection with the NEET issue. He claimed that many of those involved had come from areas including Rajabazar, Kidderpore, Park Circus, Garden Reach, Ekbalpur and Newtown.
The Chief Minister alleged that these individuals hurled water bottles and shoes at police personnel near Dorina Crossing and also attacked media persons covering the protest. He said six journalists sustained serious injuries in the violence.
Adhikari further alleged that the intention of the anti-social elements was to provoke the police into using force, including baton charges and tear gas, to escalate tensions. He said the police exercised restraint despite repeated provocations.
The Chief Minister announced that seven cases linked to the violence would be investigated under the West Bengal Public Safety & Control of Anti-Social Activities Act, 2026, which provides stricter provisions against anti-social activities.
Officials have so far registered seven FIRs in connection with Friday’s violence, while around 70 individuals have been identified through CCTV footage and video recordings for their alleged involvement.
