India’s First Indigenous Hydrogen Train Covers 1,200 km, Saves 3,200 Litres of Diesel

Mumbai, July 25, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

India’s first indigenous hydrogen-powered train has successfully completed more than 1,200 kilometres of trial runs, saving over 3,200 litres of diesel while demonstrating zero tailpipe carbon emissions, the Ministry of Railways said on Saturday.

The 10-coach hydrogen fuel cell train generates electricity onboard through a chemical reaction between hydrogen and oxygen, with water vapour as its only emission. The smoke-free propulsion system is being projected as the cleanest form of rail transport currently available.

The train is powered by two hydrogen-driven power cars with a combined output of 2,400 kW. It also features lithium iron phosphate batteries and hydrogen storage cylinders. Green hydrogen is stored at pressures of up to 500 bar and dispensed at 350 bar, with a total storage capacity of around 3,000 kg.

According to the Ministry, the train is equipped with multiple safety mechanisms, including systems to detect hydrogen leaks, heat, flames and smoke, along with automatic shut-off features, continuous ventilation and compliance with international safety standards.

Following successful trials between Jind and Sonipat, the Railways plans to begin test operations on the Delhi route shortly.

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said the country has retained the intellectual property rights for the indigenous hydrogen train technology, opening possibilities for future exports. He said the fully indigenous 2,400 kW hydrogen propulsion system reflects the vision of an Aatmanirbhar Bharat and marks a significant step towards sustainable, zero-emission rail transport.
