Tharoor Says Education Minister’s Exit Must Mark Beginning of Reforms, Not End of Accountability

New Delhi, July 25, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

Senior Congress leader and Member of Parliament Shashi Tharoor on Saturday said the resignation of the Union Education Minister marked an important moment of democratic accountability but stressed that the development should be viewed only as the beginning of a broader process of reform.

Reacting to the minister’s resignation following the nationwide student agitation led by the CJP, Tharoor said the development demonstrated that accountability in a democracy could not be evaded indefinitely.

He said the resignation came after weeks of determined and peaceful protests by students, parents and citizens across the country who refused to let their concerns go unheard.

The Congress leader also expressed concern over what he described as the use of police force against young protesters exercising their democratic right to peaceful dissent. He said the reported incidents of police action against students should concern every citizen, irrespective of political affiliation.

Tharoor, however, asserted that accountability should not end with the resignation of a minister. He called for transparent reforms, greater institutional responsibility and corrective measures to address the deeper shortcomings that had led to the crisis.

He said it was essential to ensure that the future of no young Indian was put at risk because of systemic failures. According to Tharoor, the students who participated in the peaceful movement deserved to see meaningful reforms emerge from their struggle rather than treating the minister’s resignation as the conclusion of the issue.
