The Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) on Saturday criticised the Union government, Delhi Police and judiciary over the handling of protests related to NEET-UG paper leaks, alleging that democratic institutions and constitutional values were being undermined.
In an editorial published in the party mouthpiece Saamana, the Uddhav Thackeray-led faction said the words “We, the People of India” in the Constitution’s Preamble represent the foundation of Indian democracy and alleged that the principles of justice, liberty, equality and fraternity have been weakened in recent years.
The editorial claimed that repeated examination paper leaks have caused widespread anger among students and accused the government of failing to address the issue through effective reforms.
It also raised questions over the conclusion of climate activist Sonam Wangchuk’s 26-day hunger strike at Jantar Mantar, stating that the protesters’ key demands, including the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, were not accepted.
The editorial referred to allegations of police action against protesters and criticised the reported use of force during demonstrations. It also accused the government of dismissing student concerns and turning the issue into a political confrontation.
Highlighting the scale of examination-related irregularities, the editorial cited figures shared by Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, claiming that numerous paper leak cases have occurred across the country over the past decade without convictions.
The Thackeray faction also criticised Union Ministers J.P. Nadda and Dharmendra Pradhan over their remarks on the protests, while rejecting allegations that opposition support for students amounted to political opportunism.
The editorial further said that members of the legal fraternity had shown solidarity with protesting students by gathering at the Supreme Court premises and reading the Preamble of the Constitution.
The Shiv Sena (UBT) concluded by asserting that citizens would continue to protect democratic and constitutional values despite concerns over the functioning of state institutions.
