Delhi Police Add Attempted Murder Charge in FIR Over July 20 NEET Protest Violence

New Delhi, July 25, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

Delhi Police have invoked the charge of attempted murder in an FIR registered in connection with the violence that erupted near Rail Bhawan and Parliament during the July 20 protest march over alleged examination irregularities.

The FIR, registered at Kartavya Path Police Station on the complaint of a police inspector, details the sequence of events during the protest in the high-security zone around Parliament.

According to the complaint, police personnel deployed near the Rail Bhawan roundabout found thousands of protesters gathered despite prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS). The FIR states that repeated announcements were made asking the crowd to disperse as permission for the protest had not been granted.

Police alleged that some protesters incited the crowd to breach barricades and march towards Parliament. The FIR further claims that police personnel were surrounded and attacked, with stones and slippers allegedly thrown at security forces, resulting in injuries to several officers.

The case has been registered under 13 provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including Section 109(1) relating to attempted murder, along with offences related to assault on public servants, obstruction of official duty, unlawful assembly, rioting, damage to public property and acts endangering human life.

According to Delhi Police, 129 police personnel and more than 60 protesters were injured during the clashes. Police said they resorted to a lathi-charge and fired tear gas shells to disperse the crowd and restore order.

Officials said around 15 FIRs have been registered so far in connection with the violence. Delhi Police also stated that any allegations made by the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) or other individuals and organisations regarding the incident would be examined and investigated.
