Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday spoke to Indian pilot Captain Smit Machchhar, who was injured in a cockpit attack aboard a Flydubai flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv, and praised his courage and presence of mind during the mid-air crisis.
During the telephonic conversation, Machchhar briefed the Prime Minister about the incident and what gave him the courage to respond to the attack. Modi applauded his bravery and resourcefulness and wished him a speedy recovery.
Machchhar is currently recovering in the UAE after being shifted from Saudi Arabia, where the aircraft made an emergency landing following the incident. The pilot remains in stable condition, according to Indian officials.
The Prime Minister had also spoken to members of Machchhar’s family on Thursday and assured them that Indian missions were extending all possible assistance.
Indian Ambassador to the UAE Deepak Mittal met Machchhar and his family at the hospital and said the pilot was speaking openly, smiling and in good spirits. He said Machchhar was receiving appropriate medical treatment and that the Indian Embassy remained in close contact with UAE authorities.
The incident occurred on Flydubai flight FZ1073 on September 30. The aircraft was carrying more than 170 people when the co-pilot allegedly attacked Machchhar in the cockpit. Despite sustaining serious injuries, the Indian captain managed to respond to the situation and open the cockpit door, allowing others to intervene. The aircraft subsequently landed safely in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia. Investigations by authorities in the region are continuing.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has also expressed concern over the incident and condemned the attack. His spokesperson said Guterres was grateful to the authorities involved for ensuring the safety of passengers and conducting an investigation.
