Actor Sumeet Raghavan has praised Chumbak director Aatish Kapadia for his distinctive humour, emotionally engaging storytelling and ability to bring out the best in actors, saying he is in awe of the filmmaker’s creative vision.
Raghavan, who has received a positive response for his performance in the recently released show, shared his experience during a promotional interaction with IANS in Mumbai’s Bandra-Kurla Complex. The interaction also featured co-stars Sandeepa Dhar, Sumeet Vyas, Neena Gupta and Manasi Parekh.
Lauding Kapadia’s storytelling style, Raghavan said the director’s distinctive brand of humour could either intimidate actors or leave them admiring his talent. He added that the cast had great confidence in Kapadia’s creative vision and trusted his guidance in portraying their characters.
“You can either be intimidated by Aatish’s brand of humour, or you’re in awe of that. So, all the people here, we all are in awe,” Raghavan said, adding that the characters created by Kapadia reflected the director’s own understanding of human behaviour.
Describing the filmmaker as a “chameleon”, the actor said Kapadia had a deep understanding of his characters and knew how to communicate his vision to the performers. Raghavan noted that actors could rely on the director’s guidance to shape their performances.
He also highlighted the strong professional relationship he shares with Kapadia and the team, revealing that Chumbak is his sixth show with them. Their familiarity with one another, he said, helps create a comfortable working environment in which actors are encouraged to push their boundaries.
“He knows everyone’s plus point. He always encourages you. He pushes you. So, you’re ready,” Raghavan said, explaining how Kapadia’s direction helps actors prepare for their roles.
Chumbak is a multi-generational comedy set in a contemporary urban Indian neighbourhood where celebrations, personal crises and everyday events bring residents together. With no occasion too small and no problem remaining private, the series explores the humour and chaos of a community that functions like an extended family.
Combining warmth, wit and sharp observations of everyday life, the show brings together characters and relationships across generations.
Chumbak is available to stream on Netflix.
