An Emirates flight from Dubai to London Heathrow was diverted to Frankfurt, Germany, on Thursday after a passenger experienced a medical emergency onboard.
Emirates confirmed that Flight EK31 was diverted to Frankfurt on October 1 because of the medical situation involving a passenger.
“Emirates can confirm that flight EK31 from Dubai to London Heathrow diverted to Frankfurt on 1 October due to a medical emergency involving a passenger onboard,” an airline spokesperson said.
The cabin crew provided assistance to the passenger during the flight, while medical support was arranged in Frankfurt ahead of the aircraft’s arrival.
The aircraft landed safely in Frankfurt and was expected to continue its journey to London Heathrow after the medical emergency was addressed.
The airline apologised to passengers for the disruption, reiterating that the health and safety of passengers and crew remained its highest priority.
Flight-tracking service Flightradar24 reported that EK31 issued the emergency transponder code “squawk 7700” before descending towards Frankfurt.
The diversion comes amid heightened attention to aviation safety following a separate incident involving a Flydubai flight that made an emergency landing in Saudi Arabia.
UAE Attorney-General Hamad Saif Al Shamsi has ordered the formation of a specialised investigation team to examine the circumstances and causes of the Flydubai incident, including whether there was any connection to terrorist activity or intent.
According to a statement issued by the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the team comprises specialised members of the Public Prosecution.
The UAE authorities said the country’s judicial authorities have jurisdiction to investigate the incident under applicable legislation because the aircraft is registered in the UAE and operates under its flag. The statement said UAE law applies to crimes committed onboard the aircraft even when they occur outside UAE territory.
The Flydubai flight, FZ1073, was travelling from Dubai to Tel Aviv on Wednesday when, according to the reported account, the co-pilot allegedly attempted to sabotage the aircraft and stabbed Captain Smit Machchhar while the captain tried to intervene.
