Nishio, October 2, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)
India’s Lovlina Borgohain celebrated her 29th birthday in memorable fashion on Friday, winning the women’s 75kg boxing gold at the Asian Games 2026 and becoming only the second Indian woman boxer to claim an Asian Games title after the legendary Mary Kom.
The Tokyo Olympic bronze medallist defeated China’s Bao Ziyi by a unanimous 5-0 decision in the final at Nishio Gymnasium, adding an Asian Games gold to her growing medal collection.
Lovlina dominated the bout after a closely contested opening round, which she won 3-2. She then stepped up her performance in the second and third rounds, taking both 4-1 to seal the victory. Four judges scored the bout 29-28 in her favour, while one awarded her a 30-27 verdict.
The gold came after a strong campaign in Nishio. Lovlina defeated South Korea’s Seong Suyeon 5-0 in the quarterfinal to secure a medal before overcoming Kazakhstan’s Natalya Bogdanova 3-2 in a split decision in the semifinal.
Against Bogdanova, Lovlina recovered from a narrow deficit in the opening round to edge through a closely fought contest and book her place in the final.
The triumph also gave India its first boxing gold medal of the ongoing Asian Games.
Lovlina, who won silver at the 2026 Commonwealth Games, now joins Mary Kom as the only Indian women boxers to have won Asian Games gold.
India also secured two more boxing berths in the finals on Friday. Ankush produced a comeback victory over Erkinboev, winning their semifinal 4-1 after trailing 1-4 at the end of the opening round. He fought back to take the second round 3-2 before sealing the contest.
Parveen Hooda also advanced to the final of the women’s 65kg category with a comprehensive 5-0 victory over China’s Li Shu.
Both Ankush and Parveen will contest their respective gold-medal bouts on Friday, with India seeking to add to its boxing gold tally at the Games.
