Punjab Police DSP and Olympian Tejinderpal Singh Toor received a warm welcome in Patiala after winning his third consecutive Asian Games medal in shot put, with the District Administration, sportspersons and residents felicitating him at Punjabi University.

A large number of youngsters, athletes and residents attended the welcome ceremony, held under the leadership of MLA Gurlal Ghanour, to honour Toor for bringing laurels to Patiala, Punjab and the country at the international level.

Toor, who had won gold medals in shot put at the previous two Asian Games, secured a silver medal this time. He thanked Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann and the Punjab Government for their support to sportspersons, saying that the government was encouraging athletes and providing them with the assistance needed to excel.

Toor said injuries sustained earlier had affected his performance and prevented him from winning gold at this edition of the Games. However, with the support of his family, department and the government, he remained determined to work hard and win gold medals at upcoming international competitions.

He said the Punjab Government was undertaking several initiatives to improve sports facilities and strengthen athletes’ preparations. According to Toor, sportspersons were receiving assistance ranging from training camps to participation in international competitions, which had helped boost their morale.

Welcoming the Olympian, MLA Gurlal Ghanour described Toor’s achievement as a major source of inspiration for young sportspersons. He said that inspired by athletes such as Toor and Daljit Singh Rana, as well as District Sports Officer Navjot Singh Dhaliwal, young players from Patiala were making their mark in athletics, shot put, discus throw and other sporting disciplines.

Ghanour said winning medals at the international level in events such as shot put and discus throw required exceptional hard work and dedication. He said Toor had brought pride to his family, Patiala, Punjab and the country through his achievements.

The MLA also highlighted the Punjab Government’s initiatives to develop sports grounds in villages and promote sporting activities, saying these efforts were creating more opportunities for youngsters to take up sports.

Ghanour expressed hope that Toor would deliver even stronger performances in upcoming international competitions and win more medals for the country.

Among those present at the ceremony were SDM Gurdev Singh, Daljit Singh Rana, District Sports Officer Navjot Singh Dhaliwal, international wrestler and Wrestling Association Patiala president Randhir Singh, Athletics Association president Harbhajan Singh, along with several residents, sports enthusiasts and members of Toor’s family.
