Hollywood actress Catherine Zeta-Jones has revealed that the British comedy series The Darling Buds of May changed her life and turned her into a “celebrity overnight”, but also affected how audiences viewed her as an actress.
Speaking on The Graham Norton Show, Zeta-Jones said the show’s success brought her widespread recognition, with some people seemingly forgetting her acting credentials.
“That one hour of television changed my life. I became a celebrity overnight and people sort of forgot I was an actor,” she said.
After achieving further success on British television, Zeta-Jones made the transition to Hollywood. She appeared alongside Billy Zane in the 1996 superhero film The Phantom.
The actress said moving to Los Angeles meant starting over professionally, as she was largely unknown in the United States, despite having become a well-known celebrity in the United Kingdom.
“When I went to LA literally nobody knew me, which was a huge ego jolt at first but then extremely humbling, and ultimately very good for me to start afresh,” she said.
Zeta-Jones is set to star in the upcoming Amazon Prime Video series Kill Jackie, in which she plays Jackie Price, a wealthy art dealer who discovers she has become the target of a deadly group of hitmen known as The Seven Demons.
Describing the role as a rewarding opportunity, she said, “It is a gift of a part. The show is crazy and high-octane and she is really crazy.”
The actress, who is 57, added that the role was particularly satisfying and that returning to work in a familiar setting had been fulfilling. She also expressed delight at being able to use her native Welsh voice on screen for the first time.
“It was one of those parts and, at 57, the kind of role that is very satisfying, to say the least. Going home was just so incredibly wonderful. It was very fulfilling and to be able to use my own Welsh voice for the very first time was wonderful,” she said.
