US Central Command (CENTCOM) has announced plans to establish its first-ever multinational, multi-domain attack drone task force, bringing together unmanned systems and military personnel from the United States and regional partner countries.
The new unit, named Task Force Falcon Strike, will operate one-way attack drones across air, surface and subsurface maritime domains, according to a CENTCOM statement posted on X.
The task force is being established nine months after CENTCOM created Task Force Scorpion Strike, described by the US military as its first dedicated one-way attack drone squadron in the Middle East.
Scorpion Strike achieved several operational milestones, including the first launch of an aerial attack drone from a US Navy warship in December last year. The unit also employed one-way unmanned aerial systems during Operation Epic Fury and used unmanned attack vessels in strikes on Iranian port facilities in July, CENTCOM said.
Adm. Brad Cooper, commander of CENTCOM, said Falcon Strike would build on the experience of Scorpion Strike while drawing on technological developments among US regional allies and partners.
“Integrating and deploying our new capabilities together will help us rapidly realise the new possibilities that are on the horizon,” Cooper said.
CENTCOM has begun consultations with regional partners and is formally inviting them to join the task force. Once partners are integrated, Falcon Strike is expected to expand attack-drone capabilities across the Middle East and create a unified, multi-domain multinational deterrent.
Cooper said the US had strong partnerships across the region and that joint integration of emerging capabilities would strengthen all participating countries.
Personnel from US Special Operations Command Central (SOCCENT), which launched Scorpion Strike, will lead the Falcon Strike staff comprising US and regional representatives.
SOCCENT is headquartered at MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa and plans and conducts special operations across CENTCOM’s 21-country area of responsibility covering the Middle East, Central Asia and South Asia.
