Veteran actor Kamal Haasan has completed 67 years in cinema and marked the milestone with a reflective note on his long journey, describing himself as the “oldest of Gen Z in cinema” as he continues to learn and adapt to a changing film industry.
Taking to X, Haasan said that despite spending 67 years in cinema, he considers only about 20 of those years as a period of genuine learning, while the rest of his career was spent “going with the flow”.
The actor also placed his career in the broader history of cinema, noting that the industry has existed for around 130 years since the Lumière brothers’ first public film screening in December 1895.
“My team reminded me that I have been around for 67 of those years, more than half of the entire history of the film industry! That is a rather extraordinary thought to take in,” Haasan wrote.
He added that he could personally count only around 20 years as actual learning and quipped, “I am probably the oldest of the Gen Z in cinema.”
Reflecting on cinema as a collective journey, Haasan likened artists and audiences to streams moving towards a larger, unchannelled sea of collective cinema. He also expressed hope that the experience accumulated over the years could continue to evolve before his time in the industry is measured in other ways.
Haasan’s association with cinema began as a child artist. At the age of six, he received the Rashtrapati Award, also known as the President’s Gold Medal, for his performance in Kalathur Kannamma.
He subsequently appeared in five more films as a child artist before making his Malayalam film debut with Kannum Karalum in 1962.
Over a career spanning more than six decades, Haasan has acted in over 230 films across Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Hindi, Kannada and Bengali cinema.
