A fresh police complaint has been filed against Trinamool Congress Lok Sabha MP Abhishek Banerjee and 78 others in connection with an alleged attack during a BJP programme in Diamond Harbour in West Bengal’s South 24 Parganas district in 2020.
BJP leader Abhijit Das alias Bobby submitted the complaint at the Diamond Harbour police station on Thursday. Among those named are Abhishek Banerjee and his executive assistant Sumit Roy.
According to Das, the incident occurred on October 6, 2020, when BJP workers and supporters were heading to a political programme in Diamond Harbour. He alleged that BJP’s West Bengal unit president Samik Bhattacharya’s vehicle was attacked and vandalised and that several party workers and supporters were injured.
Das alleged that despite a police investigation at the time, the case did not progress satisfactorily and accused political influence of affecting the probe. He also questioned the police response and claimed that the victims had yet to receive justice.
Explaining the fresh complaint, Das said the incident should not be treated merely as a political clash and that investigators should examine whether there was a larger conspiracy behind the attack.
He demanded an impartial investigation without political pressure and said action should be taken against those named if the allegations are established.
The BJP leader has previously lodged several complaints against Abhishek Banerjee in Diamond Harbour, including allegations of corruption and irregularities related to the Trinamool Congress MP’s medical camp initiative, ‘Sebaashray’.
The latest complaint comes nearly six years after the alleged 2020 incident and seeks a fresh examination of the allegations and the role of those named.
