Delhi Metro services across all lines will begin at 4 a.m. on August 15 to facilitate the movement of special guests, invitees and the general public attending the Independence Day celebrations at the Red Fort, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) announced on Thursday.
According to the DMRC, metro services will operate at 30-minute intervals on all lines from 4 a.m. until regular revenue services begin as per the scheduled timetable for the day.
To facilitate travel for special guests and bona fide invitees attending the Independence Day celebrations, the DMRC has provided 1.30 lakh special pre-vended QR tickets to the Ministry of Defence.
Invitees carrying valid physical admit cards issued by the Ministry of Defence will also be provided special pre-vended QR tickets at designated metro stations to facilitate their journey. The Ministry of Defence will reimburse the DMRC for travel undertaken using these special QR tickets.
The nearest Metro stations to the Red Fort, the venue for the Independence Day celebrations, are Lal Quila, Jama Masjid and Delhi Gate.
The DMRC had also issued an advisory a day earlier urging people across Delhi-NCR not to fly kites near elevated Metro corridors. It warned that kite strings could become entangled with high-voltage overhead equipment (OHE), potentially disrupting train operations and creating serious safety hazards.
The corporation appealed for public cooperation to ensure the safety of passengers, Metro staff and members of the public and to maintain uninterrupted services during the Independence Day period.
Meanwhile, a full dress rehearsal for the 80th Independence Day celebrations was held at the historic Red Fort on Thursday. The rehearsal took place amid heightened security arrangements and traffic restrictions in the national capital.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to address the nation from the Red Fort ramparts on August 15. The celebrations are expected to draw large crowds and lead to extensive movement restrictions across Delhi.
