The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and Opposition traded accusations on Thursday over the disruptions that marked Parliament’s Monsoon Session, with both sides blaming the other for the limited legislative and parliamentary business conducted during the session.
The session remained contentious, with Opposition parties repeatedly demanding the presence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah and seeking his response on the alleged police action against students during the July 20 Parliament march.
Shah had said on Wednesday that he was ready to answer questions on the issue. However, Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi said the Opposition was not interested in the Home Minister’s “imagination or lectures” and wanted to know who had ordered police to “shoot” at the protesting youth.
Union Education Minister Pralhad Joshi blamed Gandhi’s conduct for the disruption, accusing him of allowing personal ego to derail the session. He alleged that the Opposition withdrew from discussions after its demands were accepted.
Union Minister Anupriya Patel similarly accused the Opposition of adopting a negative approach and said the session had been dominated by sloganeering and disruptions.
Minister of State Sukanta Majumdar said the Opposition had repeatedly changed its demands, while MoS S.P. Singh Baghel also criticised Gandhi’s conduct during the session.
TDP MP Krishna Prasad Tenneti, however, expressed disappointment over the proceedings, saying that although more than 15 Bills were passed, there was inadequate discussion on them.
BJP leader and first-time Rajya Sabha MP Satish Poonia also described the session as disappointing, saying he had expected to learn through debates between the government and Opposition.
Opposition leaders hit back at the government. RJD MP Sanjay Yadav accused the BJP of being responsible for the session’s disruptions and questioned where issues concerning farmers, students and alleged corruption would be discussed.
Congress MP Deepender Hooda accused the government of failing to address issues including inflation, unemployment, the alleged use of pellet guns against students, the NEET paper leak and the E20 fuel issue.
SP MP Dharmendra Yadav alleged that the government had repeatedly blocked discussion on the alleged misappropriation of donations made at the Ram Temple in Ayodhya.
Shiv Sena-UBT MP Anil Desai also questioned the government’s response to the July 20 protest incident, saying taxpayers had a right to seek accountability over issues concerning public expenditure and governance.
