A second-year engineering student at IIT Kharagpur died on Thursday after falling from the fourth floor of a campus building, with police investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The deceased was identified as Ankit Sharma, a Rajasthan resident and Mechanical Engineering student who joined the institute in July last year.
According to police, Sharma fell from the fourth floor of the Nalanda building at around 3 p.m. He was found seriously injured and bleeding by campus security personnel, who rushed him to B.C. Roy Hospital. Doctors, however, declared him brought dead.
Police personnel from the Hijli outpost of Kharagpur Town police station reached the campus after being alerted about the incident. Officials are examining whether Sharma fell accidentally or jumped from the building. Police are also trying to establish what happened immediately before the fall.
Additional Superintendent of Police (Kharagpur) Bushara Bano visited the site and said the death was unusual and that the circumstances were being investigated.
“There has been an unusual death of a student. He fell from the fourth floor. What exactly happened is being investigated,” Bano said.
Police said Sharma had a class in the Nalanda building around the time of the incident.
The IIT Kharagpur administration has not issued a statement on the incident so far.
The latest death comes amid a series of student and staff deaths on the campus. Last month, the body of Deepak Reddy Pullaguram, an assistant professor in the Electrical Engineering department, was found hanging at his quarters. Pullaguram was a resident of Hyderabad.
In April this year, IIT Kharagpur student Jaiveer Singh Dodia died after jumping from the eighth floor of the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Hall. The institute also witnessed seven student deaths in 2025 under mysterious circumstances, five of whom were found hanging.
