Australia women’s vice-captain Ashleigh Gardner has broken her silence over her ongoing personal controversy, asking the public to respect the privacy of everyone involved after Cricket Australia (CA) confirmed its decision to retain her in the leadership role.
Gardner has faced public scrutiny following allegations made by her estranged wife, Monica Wright, regarding an alleged relationship involving Gardner and Australia opener Georgia Voll during the 2025 Women’s ODI World Cup in India. Wright had also questioned CA’s decision to continue Gardner as vice-captain.
In a statement shared on her Instagram Stories, Gardner acknowledged that her personal circumstances had to be addressed by CA because of her position within the national team.
“While my separation from my wife is a personal matter, I understand my current relationship status needed to be addressed by Cricket Australia given my position as vice-captain,” Gardner said.
She thanked the CA Board for continuing to support her leadership and said she was looking forward to contributing to the team in the upcoming season.
Gardner and Wright married in April 2025, before their relationship reportedly deteriorated during the ODI World Cup in India. Wright later alleged that Gardner had been involved in an affair with Voll after Gardner moved out of their Sydney home.
Expressing regret over the pain caused by the separation, Gardner said she was grateful for the time she and Wright had shared and wished her estranged wife “happiness and success” in the future.
Gardner also made it clear that she did not intend to comment publicly on the matter further and appealed for privacy for all those involved.
CA has previously maintained that the dispute between Gardner and Wright is a private matter. The board said conflict-of-interest arrangements had been activated under its Respect at Work policy to safeguard team integrity.
Gardner’s Women’s Big Bash League franchise, Sydney Sixers, has also expressed its support for the Australia all-rounder.
