Bharatiya Janata Party Punjab president Kewal Singh Dhillon on Thursday condemned the attack on Shiromani Akali Dal president Sukhbir Singh Badal at Takht Sachkhand Sri Hazur Sahib, calling the incident deeply unfortunate and concerning.
Dhillon said violence had no place in society or a democratic system and stressed that any incident that violates the sanctity and dignity of a religious place could not be tolerated.
“Political differences are one thing, but violence or an attack of this nature is extremely unfortunate,” he said.
Describing Sri Hazur Sahib as a sacred place that conveys the message of peace, service, meditation and Sarbat Da Bhala — the welfare of all — Dhillon said an act of violence there was distressing for the Sikh community as well as peace-loving people.
He prayed for the speedy recovery and Chardi Kala of Sukhbir Singh Badal and called for an impartial investigation into the incident.
Dhillon also demanded strict legal action against those found responsible.
Appealing to Punjabis and the Sangat, the BJP state president urged everyone to maintain peace, communal harmony and mutual respect and refrain from violence or any provocative action.
