Air India has initiated mandatory screening of all pilots across its group for prohibited substances and medications, in a move aimed at strengthening safety protocols and reassuring passengers following a recent turbulence incident involving a Phuket-Delhi flight.
According to a communication sent to pilots and seen by IANS, the screening programme begins on August 13 and covers all pilots across the Air India group.
The Tata Group-owned airline said its reputation has been built on the professionalism, competence and safety commitment of its pilots and employees, adding that retaining public confidence remains a key priority.
Air India said it already complies with safety requirements prescribed by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), which it noted are broadly aligned with aviation practices in major markets such as Europe and the United States.
However, the airline has decided to go beyond the existing regulatory requirements by conducting comprehensive screening for substances or medications prohibited under prevailing aviation regulations.
The tests will be mandatory and will be conducted alongside training sessions at the airline’s Gurugram Academy. Screening will also take place after flights at Flight Briefing Centres and Air India offices, as well as at designated locations across pilots’ operating bases.
The airline described the initiative as an additional safety measure intended to reinforce professional standards and provide greater assurance to passengers, stakeholders and the wider community.
Pilots have been advised to approach their respective chief pilots or base managers for any clarification concerning the screening process.
The decision follows a recent Air India flight from Phuket to Delhi that experienced a sudden loss of altitude amid severe turbulence. According to the source material, the pilot in command was taking medication for sleep difficulties.
