Seven-hour student protest forces Jharkhand administration to revoke headmaster’s transfer

Garhwa (Jharkhand), August 13, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

A seven-hour protest by schoolchildren aged between 10 and 13 in Jharkhand’s Garhwa district on Thursday ended with the administration revoking the transfer of their headmaster and reinstating him at the school.

The protest took place outside the Government Plus Two High School at Kandi block headquarters after Headmaster Malay Kumar Singh was transferred on Wednesday. Students gathered in large numbers on Thursday and blocked the Kandi-Bhawanathpur main road, bringing traffic to a standstill and leaving vehicles stranded in long queues.

Carrying placards and raising slogans, the students demanded that Singh’s transfer order be withdrawn. Most of the protesters were between 10 and 13 years old, prompting social media users to describe the demonstration as a “Gen Alpha movement”.

The students said the functioning of the school had improved significantly after Singh took charge and opposed his removal.

Tension escalated during the protest after allegations surfaced that Kandi Block Chief Satyendra Pandey had raised his hand against a student. The protesting children subsequently gathered outside the local police station. Stone-pelting, vandalism and clashes were reported, during which police constable Mohammad Ashfaq Alam sustained injuries. Pandey’s vehicle was also damaged, including its windshield.

However, Kandi BDO Rakesh Sahay said no child was involved in stone-pelting. Pandey also denied assaulting any student and alleged that people involved in local politics were behind the attack on his vehicle. He said he had no grievance against the protesting children.

Police Sub-Inspector Brij Kumar, Garhwa SDPO Dilu Lohara and BDO Sahay reached the site and attempted to persuade the protesters to end the blockade.

After nearly seven hours, the district administration issued an order reinstating Singh as headmaster of the Kandi school. The students then called off their protest and traffic on the road resumed normally.
