Former Punjab Deputy Chief Minister and Congress MP Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa on Thursday strongly condemned the attack on Shiromani Akali Dal president Sukhbir Singh Badal, saying there could be no place for violence in or around a sacred Guru Ghar.
Randhawa described the incident as extremely unfortunate and unacceptable, particularly as Badal had visited the religious shrine to seek the Guru’s blessings.
He said attacking any person who had come to take refuge in the presence of the Guru was condemnable under all circumstances. He also offered prayers to Waheguru and wished Badal a speedy recovery.
Randhawa said Sri Guru Granth Sahib and the Guru Ghar convey the message of peace, tolerance, brotherhood and the welfare of humanity. Maintaining the sanctity and religious decorum of places of worship was therefore the responsibility of everyone, he added.
He said political or personal differences should never be allowed to turn into violence, describing such conduct as contrary to Punjab’s tradition of peace and tolerance.
Randhawa stressed that differences should be addressed through democratic and peaceful means and that the sanctity of religious places must be respected at all times.
