Megastar Amitabh Bachchan has revisited a fond memory of his late Sholay co-star Dharmendra, recalling the veteran actor’s extraordinary generosity and describing his home as a place where everyone was welcome.
Bachchan shared the anecdote while hosting the latest season of the iconic quiz show Kaun Banega Crorepati, reflecting on Dharmendra’s famously warm and open-hearted nature.
Recalling Dharmendra’s home, Bachchan said it was effectively “free for all”, with people able to walk in and feel at home.
“Ek baat batadu inke ghar ke baare mein. Sir, inka ghar jo hai na, free for all jo aayega yeh aapka hi ghar hain,” Bachchan said.
He then recalled an amusing incident in which Dharmendra arrived home to find four or five unfamiliar men climbing the stairs. When he asked who they were and what they were doing there, they reportedly told him they had come from their village and suggested that his wife might have invited them.
Bachchan said Dharmendra himself was often unaware of how many people visited his home, but welcomed everyone with warmth.
“Bahut bada dil tha,” Bachchan said, underlining the generosity that he associated with his co-star.
Dharmendra was senior to Bachchan in the Hindi film industry, but the two became one of Indian cinema’s most memorable screen pairings through Sholay. Their characters, Jai and Veeru, became synonymous with friendship and remain among Bollywood’s most enduring on-screen duos.
The film’s song Yeh Dosti Hum Nahi Todenge, featuring the two actors on their iconic three-wheeled bike, continues to be regarded as a defining friendship anthem decades after the film’s release.
Dharmendra died in November last year. Bachchan, along with his son Abhishek Bachchan, was among those who reached the crematorium to pay their final respects to the legendary actor.
