Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and other BJP leaders on Friday paid tribute to those affected by the Partition of India, saying Partition Horrors Remembrance Day serves as a reminder of the immense suffering, displacement and sacrifices endured by millions.
Rajnath Singh, in a post on X, said the observance recalls a tragedy that brought profound sorrow, uncertainty and displacement to countless families.
He said the day was not only an opportunity to remember the painful chapter of history but also to honour the courage and resilience of people who, despite losing their homes, property, families and loved ones, rebuilt their lives.
Singh said the lessons of Partition should inspire the country to build a strong, harmonious and empathetic society where such trauma is never repeated.
He also paid tribute to those who lost their lives and to families displaced from their ancestral homes during the Partition.
Jaishankar, in his message, highlighted both the human suffering and the wider geopolitical consequences of Partition.
“On Partition Horrors Remembrance Day, recognise the enormous human suffering and far-reaching geopolitical consequences of Partition. Salute the courage and resilience of those who rebuilt their lives. But we must also remember the painful lessons from this period of our history,” he said.
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta recalled the suffering of millions who were uprooted during Partition, saying the events of 1947 involved far more than the redrawing of geographical boundaries.
She said families were separated from their ancestral homes, relationships were broken and countless lives were devastated by violence and displacement. Gupta said the observance had helped preserve the memories of the suffering and resilience of displaced families in the nation’s collective consciousness.
She said remembering Partition should strengthen the resolve to protect India’s unity, integrity, cultural oneness and social harmony.
Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha also paid tribute to those who lost their lives or suffered violence and displacement during Partition. He said their courage, resilience and sacrifices remain part of the nation’s collective memory.
Partition Horrors Remembrance Day, also known as Vibhajan Vibhishika Smriti Diwas, is observed on August 14 to remember those who lost their lives, faced violence or were displaced during the Partition of India in 1947.
