Tata Stocks Lose Over ₹68,000 Crore in Market Value After N. Chandrasekaran Opts Out of Tata Sons Reappointment

Mumbai, August 12, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

Tata Group stocks came under heavy selling pressure on Wednesday after N. Chandrasekaran decided not to seek reappointment as chairman of Tata Sons, wiping out more than ₹68,000 crore from the combined market value of the group’s listed companies.

The combined market capitalisation of 17 listed Tata Group companies declined by ₹68,119 crore to ₹26.32 lakh crore, compared with nearly ₹27 lakh crore in the previous trading session.

Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) was the biggest contributor to the decline. Its market capitalisation fell by ₹42,440 crore to ₹8.40 lakh crore after the IT major’s shares dropped 4.79 per cent to ₹2,323.30.

Titan was the second-largest drag, losing ₹9,304 crore in market value as its shares declined nearly 2 per cent.

Other major losses included ₹4,898 crore for Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles and ₹4,745 crore for Tata Steel. Tata Consumer Products shed ₹3,098 crore, while Tata Power and Indian Hotels lost ₹1,598 crore and ₹1,566 crore, respectively.

Among other Tata companies that ended lower, Tata Communications lost ₹812 crore in market value, Trent ₹907 crore, Tata Elxsi ₹606 crore, Tata Investment Corporation ₹508 crore and Tejas Networks ₹265 crore. Tata Teleservices (Maharashtra) also declined.

The sell-off was not universal. Tata Motors added ₹1,786 crore to its market value, while Tata Capital gained ₹700 crore. Tata Chemicals and Voltas also ended higher, adding ₹167 crore and ₹66 crore, respectively.

The market reaction followed Chandrasekaran’s decision not to seek an extension of his tenure as Tata Sons chairman after a board member opposed his reappointment.

Chandrasekaran said the prolonged uncertainty over the issue made it necessary for the board to proceed with succession planning.

In a statement, he said he had spent four decades of his professional career with the Tata Group and described his nearly 10-year tenure as chairman of Tata Sons as both a privilege and a major responsibility.
