Union Culture and Tourism Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat on Thursday took a sharp swipe at Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, questioning his prospects of becoming Prime Minister and asserting that the country’s top constitutional office cannot be claimed as a family entitlement.
In a post on social media, Shekhawat referred to the Nehru-Gandhi family’s political legacy while arguing that having successive family members occupy the Prime Minister’s office does not guarantee the continuation of that political success.
“Your father was Prime Minister, your grandmother was Prime Minister, and your great-grandfather was also Prime Minister; yet, you know that you will never become Prime Minister,” Shekhawat said.
The Union Minister argued that political inheritance alone cannot determine a leader’s rise, saying public acceptance, leadership, political credibility and commitment to the country ultimately shape electoral prospects.
He also took a personal dig at Gandhi, suggesting that his political frustration was increasing with age.
“Pray to God to grant you the strength to accept this reality,” Shekhawat said.
The remarks come amid continuing political exchanges between the BJP and Congress over leadership, governance and the legacy of the Nehru-Gandhi family.
Shekhawat’s comments sought to draw a distinction between political lineage and electoral legitimacy, arguing that the Prime Minister’s position is earned through public support rather than inherited as a family legacy.
The latest attack is expected to add to the ongoing political confrontation between the BJP and Congress over Rahul Gandhi’s leadership and the Congress party’s long association with the Prime Minister’s Office.
