Minor student protester Nishu Azad has said she stopped attending school for weeks and felt ashamed to leave her home after allegedly receiving rape threats and abusive messages from supporters of Swatantra Bharadwaj, who is accused of assaulting her father during a protest at Jantar Mantar.
Her remarks came after the Delhi Police assured protesters that Bharadwaj would be arrested within 72 hours under provisions of the POCSO Act, the SC/ST Act and for attempt to murder, following an agitation by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) outside Parliament Street Police Station on Friday.
The protest was joined by Azad Samaj Party chief and MP Chandrashekhar Azad, Purnia MP Pappu Yadav and the Indian Youth Congress.
Speaking to reporters, Nishu said she had been subjected to sustained abuse and rape threats.
“For so many days, the people who support them were abusing me and issuing rape threats against me. I have got an FIR lodged against them. I hope the police will now take action so that I don’t have to endure all this anymore,” she said.
Describing the impact of the alleged threats, she said, “The way these people were abusing me, giving rape threats, and making vulgar stickers of me, I was feeling ashamed even to step out of my house.”
She added that she had not attended school for two to three weeks following the incident and now felt that people were judging her when she went back.
Nishu also alleged that the police had remained unresponsive to her complaints until Friday’s developments, when they assured action.
The controversy began after a purported viral video in which Bharadwaj allegedly claimed to have assaulted Nishu’s father, Sanjay, during the Jantar Mantar demonstration and allegedly boasted that he was released by Delhi Police because of his political connections.
Chandrashekhar Azad said earlier in the day that Sanjay and his daughter were facing continued threats of rape, acid attacks and murder.
“Sanjay and his daughter are constantly receiving threats of rape, acid attacks, and murder—they are living in fear. If this is the condition in the country’s capital, you can imagine what the situation must be in rural areas,” he said.
Azad warned that the protesters would intensify their agitation if the police failed to act within the promised timeframe.
“If the arrests are not made as promised, we will undertake a ‘gherao’ of the Police Commissioner’s office and, if required, of the Home Ministry as well,” he said.
CJP co-convener Saurav Das said the organisation had faith that the Delhi Police would honour its commitment.
“The goons will not be allowed to roam freely like this,” Das told reporters.
