Police in Andhra Pradesh’s Rajamahendravaram have invoked a provision for attempt to commit culpable homicide against two men accused of ramming their car into a two-wheeler, critically injuring a postgraduate medical student, an official said on Sunday.
The incident took place on the night of August 3 near a private mall, where Suravarapu Daswanth and Andrew Joseph Edwards allegedly rammed their car into a scooty carrying PG medical student K. Priyanka. Police said the two accused were allegedly under the influence of alcohol at the time.
Priyanka, who was pursuing an MD at GSL Medical College, is currently on ventilator support at a hospital in Hyderabad. Doctors have declared her brain-dead.
East Godavari Superintendent of Police D. Narasimha Kishore said police have registered a case under Section 110 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), relating to attempt to commit culpable homicide.
According to the investigation, the accused had allegedly been denied entry into the mall after security personnel found them intoxicated. A confrontation followed, during which they allegedly assaulted mall staff. When security personnel attempted to stop them, the duo allegedly fled in their car at high speed.
Police said the car struck the scooty three times while the accused were attempting to escape. Priyanka was riding pillion with her collegemate Umesh when the vehicle hit them near the mall gate. The accused allegedly drove over Priyanka before fleeing the spot.
Priyanka was taken to a nearby hospital, from where police received information about the incident around 10 p.m. Based on Umesh’s statement, a case was registered and the accused were arrested.
The SP said the sections were subsequently altered considering the seriousness of the incident. He added that further stringent provisions could be invoked depending on the circumstances to seek the maximum punishment permissible under law.
Kishore also rejected any suggestion of political pressure, saying the investigation was being conducted impartially on the directions of Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu.
Priyanka’s father, Venkatesh, recently met police officials and sought strict action against those responsible. He said the assurances received from the police had addressed his concerns and expressed confidence in the investigation and judicial process.
