Six youths from Gujarat were killed after a van carrying them collided head-on with a trailer truck near Panchkawasa village on the Dhar-Ujjain-Petlawad four-lane highway in Madhya Pradesh on Sunday, police said.
The victims, residents of Godhra and Panchmahal districts, were returning to Gujarat after offering prayers at the Mahakal Temple in Ujjain.
According to police, the accident took place around 1 p.m. when the van, bearing registration number GJ17CK6134 and carrying seven people, was travelling towards Gujarat. A trailer truck loaded with iron goods, bearing registration number GJ39TB9248, was allegedly travelling on the wrong side of the Badnawar-Ujjain stretch towards Ujjain when it collided with the van.
The impact was so severe that the van was completely mangled. Five occupants died at the spot, while another youth, who was critically injured, succumbed to his injuries while being taken to hospital.
Dhar Additional Superintendent of Police Vijay Dabur told IANS that those identified among the deceased include Nitesh Bhai, son of Prakash Bhai, and Mayur Kumar Chouhan, son of Prakash Bhai, both from Godhra; Vishal Kumar, son of Ramesh Bai Parmar, from Panchmahal; and Rakesh, son of Bhupat Bhai, from Godhra. The identities of two other victims are yet to be established.
The trailer driver allegedly fled the spot after the collision. Police teams led by Badnawar Station House Officer Amit Singh Kushwaha, Tehsildar Suresh Nagar and SDM Priyanka Mimrod reached the site and apprehended the driver after a chase.
Local residents and police personnel had to break open the van’s windows to rescue the occupants. The critically injured youth was taken by ambulance to Badnawar Civil Hospital, where he later died.
Police conducted formal inquest proceedings at the scene and shifted the bodies to the Civil Hospital mortuary for post-mortem examinations. Families of the identified victims in Gujarat have been informed.
A case has been registered against the trailer driver. Traffic on the highway was disrupted following the crash but was restored after police cleared the wreckage.
