Sonam Wangchuk’s Wife Moves Delhi HC, Seeks Shift to Private Hospital; Alleges ‘Illegal Detention’ at Safdarjung

New Delhi, July 19, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

Sonam Wangchuk’s wife, Gitanjali J. Angmo, has approached the Delhi High Court seeking urgent permission to shift the activist and education reform campaigner from Safdarjung Hospital to a private medical facility, alleging that he is being subjected to “illegal detention” and raising concerns over the transparency of his medical treatment.

In a statement posted on X, Angmo said she had “lost faith” in the government-run Safdarjung Hospital, claiming that the medical information shared with the family differed from what was disclosed publicly.

According to her, hospital authorities informed the family that Wangchuk’s potassium level had dropped to 2.9, describing the condition as alarming and potentially life-threatening. However, she alleged that the hospital’s public health bulletin did not mention the actual figure and referred only to “decreasing potassium levels.”

Angmo further claimed that after repeated requests, the family was allowed to get Wangchuk’s blood sample tested independently nearly 10 hours later. She said the independent laboratory reported a potassium level of 3.5, which she described as being within the normal range.

She also alleged that despite repeated requests, hospital authorities had neither discharged Wangchuk nor permitted his transfer to a private hospital of the family’s choice. Claiming that around 30 police personnel were deployed on the hospital floor and more than 100 across the hospital premises, Angmo alleged that the restrictions on their movement amounted to “illegal detention” rather than medical care.

Expressing concern over her husband’s health, she said she had moved the Delhi High Court seeking an urgent hearing to obtain permission for his transfer before his condition deteriorates further. She also sought unrestricted access for the lawyers and doctors who had been attending to Wangchuk.

“If anything happens to Sonam, the hospital authorities and the government must bear full responsibility,” Angmo said in her statement, adding that no family should have to fight the system simply to decide where a loved one receives medical treatment.

Wangchuk was shifted from the Jantar Mantar protest site to Safdarjung Hospital on Saturday after completing 21 days of a hunger strike linked to demands for reforms in the education system. The police action came after the Delhi High Court directed the authorities to take appropriate steps to safeguard his life.

Following his admission, Safdarjung Hospital said Wangchuk was medically stable but showed signs of dehydration and had declined treatment.

Meanwhile, Angmo is expected to lead the planned march to Parliament during the Monsoon Session in place of Wangchuk, who had earlier announced that he would head the demonstration.
