Sonam Wangchuk Extends Hunger Strike, Seeks Parliament Meeting for Student Protesters

New Delhi, July 20, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

Climate activist Sonam Wangchuk on Monday announced that he would continue his hunger strike until student leaders protesting in the national capital are allowed to meet Members of Parliament at Parliament House or are permitted to meet him at the hospital where he is currently undergoing treatment.

The announcement came through a handwritten message shared on social media by his wife, Geetanjali Angmo. In the note, Wangchuk expressed solidarity with the protesting youth associated with the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), a satirical political group demanding accountability over the alleged NEET-UG paper leak and the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.

“I will continue my fast (day 23). Seeing the brutality with which peacefully protesting youth are being dealt with, I have decided to continue my fast until the youth leaders are allowed to meet the Parliamentarians at the Sansad Bhawan or I am allowed to meet them here at the hospital,” Wangchuk wrote in the signed message.

He further expressed hope that the government would fix accountability in the alleged NEET-UG paper leak issue and appealed to the authorities to allow the protesting students to present their grievances before Members of Parliament.

“I am touched and moved by how the youth have held on to peace despite provocation and I appeal to the government and the police to resolve the issue by simply allowing the students to present their grievances before Parliament today or tomorrow,” the message stated. Wangchuk also urged the protesters to continue maintaining patience and peace.

His statement came hours after Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda met representatives of the Cockroach Janta Party, including Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka, amid the ongoing protest at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi. During the meeting, the CJP delegation reportedly submitted a charter of demands seeking accountability in connection with the alleged NEET-UG paper leak.

The Cockroach Janta Party, which originated as a satirical political initiative on social media, was founded by Abhijeet Dipke, a public relations graduate from Boston University who previously worked with the Aam Aadmi Party’s social media team.

Meanwhile, Delhi Police urged the public to remain cautious about misinformation being circulated on social media relating to the ongoing protests.

Separately, the Delhi High Court sought Wangchuk’s complete medical records while hearing an appeal filed by Geetanjali Angmo challenging an earlier order that declined permission for his discharge from Safdarjung Hospital and transfer to a private hospital.

A Division Bench comprising Chief Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya and Justice Tejas Karia observed that pathology reports alone cannot determine a patient’s medical condition and must always be assessed alongside the patient’s overall clinical condition.

The Bench directed Safdarjung Hospital to place on record all pathology reports prepared by the hospital, AIIMS and a private laboratory, along with all health bulletins issued regarding Wangchuk’s condition.
